The
issue of roster size and player participation has generated a great deal of
discussion in the past. The
expectations of the Bay State Baseball Tournament of Champions Board of
Directors on these topics are as follows: A.
Bay State Baseball Tournament of
Champions Player Participation Statement Bay
State Baseball Tournament of Champions (T of C) is a program of service to
youth. It strives to establish the values of teamwork, sportsmanship
and fair play in a competitive and demanding schedule of summer baseball games
for as many children as possible. B.
T of C Roster Rules and Player Participation Guidelines Team
leaders (managers/coaches) may select up to 12 regular players they wish to
have on their team roster. A
regular player listed on the roster has every right to play in every game
he/she is available for, barring discipline, illness or injury.
With the exceptions just noted, team leaders should not ask or tell a
regular player on the roster not to play or appear for any game.
Roster flexibility is assured by the creation of alternate players for a
roster. Team leaders
may also select up to 8 eligible alternate players they wish to have on their team
roster. Each of these players may, or may not, be listed on other T of C
rosters with the following limitations: A player is eligible to be on any roster for which they are age-eligible but can only be listed as a regular on ONE team. A player may NOT be listed on two different rosters at the same level of play (A, B or C Division). A player cannot be listed as an alternate for any team from the same league or at an age-level below one for which he/she is listed as a regular player. (ie- an 11-year old player who is an A team regular player cannot be a B team alternate; or a 10-year old player who is a B team regular player cannot be a C team alternate). A player can be listed as an alternate for any team from the same league at an age-level above the one for which he/she is listed as a regular player. (ie - an 11-year old player who is a B team regular player can be an A team alternate; or a 10-year old player who is a C team regular player can be a B team alternate). The exception is that any 9-year old cannot be listed on any roster outside of the C Division.
Alternate players
on a roster for a particular team may play in a limited number of
games as determined by the particular team leaders.
T
of C knows that its player participation guidelines are impossible to
effectively monitor and that team leaders may limit players on an Official
Roster to games they will and will not play in.
We are aware of all the reasons as to why team leaders do this but
still find the practice objectionable. We
encourage leaders to use all their available players in all their games. C.
Communicate Your Player Participation Plans If
team leaders choose to ignore the T of C player participation guidelines for
participation plans of their own, they should tell the parents the details of
their plans before they sign the children up to play.
It is important for the parents of your players to know just what your
roster and player participation plans are so they can accept the plans as
basic fact. It is also important
for team leaders to know that the T of C does not endorse any bending of its
player participation guidelines and intends to review and resolve, on and off
the field, any parent complaint about their team’s plans strictly under the
roster rules and player participation guidelines of the T of C and not the
unique participation plans of a team. There are way too many parent complaints and on field embarrassments centered around “inventive” participation plans for the T of C to sit back and do nothing. Teams that incur the wrath of any of its parents because the team leaders do not subscribe to the T of C player participation guidelines may find themselves uninvited to take part in a tournament, to take part in the final Tournament of Champions week or even to return the following year. Therefore, team leaders should think carefully about the creation of their Official and Alternate team rosters and player participation plans, remembering that the T of C was created for many children to enjoy a wonderful summer of baseball THE FORMATION OF THE A AND B DIVISIONS A
Division
The best players from a league or district aged 11 or 12. B
Division
The best players from a league or district aged 10 or 11. THE
CREATION OF ROUNDS OF GAMES FOR THE A AND B DIVISIONS Within each division, the T of C conducts three, two week rounds of games, with the awarding of trophies at the end of each round. Before the second and third rounds begin, every effort is made to group teams together that appear to be at the same competitive level of play. This fact is one of the primary reasons why many towns enjoy entering one or more teams into the T of C. THE FORMATION OF THE C DIVISION C
Division
The best players from a league or district aged 9 or 10. No player defined as a 9-year old may be listed outside of the Tom Wright C Division. THE CREATION OF ROUNDS OF GAMES FOR THE C DIVISION Within
the Tom Wright C Division, the T of C conducts two, two week rounds of games, with the
awarding of trophies at the end of each round. * A players league age is defined as his/her calendar age as of April 30, 2008. With the increasing popularity of this summer baseball program, more and more teams look forward to taking part. We, the officers and members of the board of directors, look forward to our 25th season. If you have any questions, please call Don McGowan at 781-272-0529 or e-mail at Baystatebaseball@aol.com .
